In her life-size pastel demo Naasir, Dreaming of Home, Carol Peebles captures more than a likeness — she captures a state of mind. Created from life for her atelier in New Orleans, the Blue Easel Club, the portrait began as a direct, observational study before evolving into something deeply introspective.
“The background came later,” Peebles explains, “as Naasir’s thoughts.” That quiet addition transforms the work from portrait to meditation. Peebles has known Naasir since he was a child; now a grown man, he sits before her not only as her model, but as a reminder of how memory shapes us long after childhood fades.
In imagining Naasir thinking of his home and early years, Peebles taps into a universal truth — that adulthood doesn’t erase the emotional imprint of who we once were. Even as we grow older, responsibility-laden and outwardly assured, there are moments when we still feel like children, anchored to places and experiences that formed us.
Naasir, Dreaming of Home invites viewers to slow down and recognize themselves in the quiet spaces of memory. It’s a powerful reminder that portraiture isn’t only about capturing what we see, but about revealing what lingers beneath the surface — the thoughts, longings, and inner lives we all carry with us.
